Mobile Racking

Racking mounted on mobile bases

What is Mobile Pallet Racking?

Mobile pallet racking can be an excellent option when floor space is at a premium. It looks and operates like standard racking, but is mounted on mobile bases, so the structure moves left to right, reducing the number of aisles required.

The whole mobile pallet racking system is operated electronically via a control panel or remote control. Rack rows can be moved individually or, to save time, as a complete block. Mobile racking provides high-density storage as aisles do not need to be left open.

It is an ideal solution for products requiring specific storage conditions, such as refrigeration or deep freeze, where it is important to make use of all the space.

System Benefits

  • High-density storage
  • 100% pallet selectivity
  • Suitable for slow-moving bulk items
  • A good solution for products which require expensive storage conditions (e.g. freezers)
  • Many types of racking can be adapted to be mobile

Common Uses

Mobile solutions are very versatile and can cater for a wide range of operations. However, they are particularly suitable for warehouses that need the following:

  • Optimise all of the available floor space
  • Storage for items in temperature-controlled environments where it is important to make optimal use of every cubic metre of temperature-controlled air
  • Operations deal with slow-moving products

Case Study – Mobile Cantilever Racking Solution at Kawneer UK

SEC Storage provided the design and installation of a high-density, mobile cantilever racking system, achieving maximum storage capacity at Kawneer UK Ltd’s manufacturing facility in Cheshire.

Our initial warehouse appraisal identified that a mobile cantilever racking solution would be the optimal system for Kawneer’s product type i.e. building materials in the form of long and awkward loads. To begin, SEC made preparations to the warehouse floor, cutting out the specified channels where the rails were to be installed. The cantilever racking was then mounted to mobile bases, with these bases then driven by a dedicated, three-phase motor along the channels.

The dynamic setup of our mobile cantilever racking solution allows for the opening and closing of various aisles via a programmed system, utilising the maximum cubic footprint of the warehouse and providing Kawneer with access to all of their individually stored pallets at any time.

Mobile systems can also allow for the usage of up to 80% of the intended installation space, making this a highly intelligent solution for those who choose it.
